KOTA KINABALU: July 29, 2026 – Sabah’s state-level Heroes’ Day celebration will be held for the first time at the State Mosque on 31 July.
The event, which begins at 5pm, is intended to commemorate the services and sacrifices of past and present defenders of the nation.
Aid and contributions will be presented to heroes identified by the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Kota Kinabalu Mayor, Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, said about 1,500 participants from various agencies and the public were expected to attend.
He said the choice of the State Mosque as the venue was in line with practice at the federal government level.
“All personnel, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, have been invited to attend. In addition to tahlil [prayers for the deceased], recitations of Surah Yasin, and the Maghrib and Isyak prayers, other activities will be held solely on the mosque grounds,” he said.
He spoke to reporters after the Heroes’ Day organising committee paid a courtesy call on Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. The visit was to formally extend an invitation for the governor to attend the celebration.
Also present were acting Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azhar Hamin; 5th Brigade Commander based at Lok Kawi Camp, Abdul Razak Harun; Deputy Director of Management at the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department, Abdul Manap Abdul Rubim; Deputy Director-General (Rural Development and Enforcement) of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), Karim Rahim; and Deputy Director-General (Management Services Sector), Faradillah Abdul Rani.
