Four years after the Falklands War, Diego Maradona produced two of the most iconic moments in World Cup history. For Argentina, it was never just about football.

For most football fans, the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England is remembered for Diego Maradona’s two goals – the “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century.” But behind Argentina’s 2-1 victory at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico lies a story far bigger than sport.

Just four years before that match, Argentina and the United Kingdom had fought the Falklands – or Malvinas – War. The 74-day conflict claimed some 900 lives and left deep scars on both nations.

‘We lied to ourselves’

Ahead of kick-off, Maradona tried to play down the tension, insisting the match was “just football.” Yet years later, he admitted that statement did not reflect what the Argentina squad truly felt.

In several post-retirement interviews, Maradona said the entire team was acutely aware that many young Argentines had perished in the Malvinas conflict – and that they could not separate football from that reality.

“We all said before the match that football had nothing to do with the Malvinas. That was a lie. We thought of nothing else. It was more than just knocking England out of the World Cup.”

That admission remains one of Maradona’s most candid revelations about the emotions that gripped the Argentina squad as they took the field in Mexico.

A quote still disputed

For years, social media has circulated a quote allegedly spoken by Maradona to his teammates before the match:

“These sons of bitches killed our kids, our friends, our neighbours. We cannot lose.”

The line is often shared as if it were established historical fact. But to this day, no video, audio or official transcript exists to prove Maradona ever said it.

Most researchers believe the words emerged from the memories of a few individuals and from reports published years after the match, rather than from verifiable primary sources. For that reason, the quote should not be presented as definitive fact.

Four minutes that changed history

What has never been disputed is what happened on the pitch.

In the 51st minute, Maradona scored by using his hand to beat England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Without VAR technology at the time, the goal was allowed by the referee.

After the match, Maradona famously said the goal had been scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God” – a remark that gave rise to the term “Hand of God.”

Just four minutes later, he made history again, dribbling nearly 60 metres, past five England players, before beating Shilton once more.

That goal was later voted the “Goal of the Century” in a FIFA poll in 2002, cementing its status as one of the greatest strikes in football history.

Argentina won 2-1 and went on to lift the World Cup for the second time.

More than a victory

Years later, Maradona acknowledged that the win carried a meaning far beyond the scoreline.

“It was more than beating a football team. It was like beating a country.”

For many Argentines, the victory has often been seen as a deeply symbolic moment in the aftermath of the Falklands conflict.

Though it could not rewrite the history of the war, that night at the Azteca Stadium became a moment forever etched in the sporting memory of the nation.

A legacy that endures

Nearly four decades have passed, yet the 1986 World Cup match between Argentina and England remains one of the most debated fixtures in football history.

Some stories continue to be contested; some quotes remain unverified. But one thing has not changed – the match proved that, under certain circumstances, football can become far more than a sport. It can reflect a nation’s history, politics and emotion.
