TENOM: Sept 12, 2026 – The Sabah Agricultural Park in Lagut Seberang has gathered about 1,000 species of plants, fruits, wild orchids and orchid plants, opening the way for younger generations to appreciate Sabah’s native flora heritage.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the collection of native Sabah fruits at the park is no longer familiar to the younger generation, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some individuals also do not know whether certain local fruits are edible.
“But today, we are giving all visitors the opportunity to identify them with greater certainty. Local orchid flowers and native Sabah fruits are also displayed and collected here,” he said after officiating the 2026 Indigenous Flower and Fruit Festival at the Sabah Agricultural Park today.
Jamawi, who is also Melalap assemblyman, said visitors could not only learn about various types of native Sabah plants and fruits, but also enjoy new experiences through activities provided throughout the 10-day festival. These include fishing areas, fishing ponds and cycling, fashion and rocket competitions.
“This afternoon, we will also take part in a Fun Run to appreciate the green environment in this area. While runs are usually held on roads, the run here takes place within the beautiful, fresh and lush agricultural park,” he said.
He said the orchid and local fruit festival was among this year’s highlights, and also an effort to promote the area. “Discover Tenom” has been appointed as the agency to promote agricultural, tourism and other activities in Tenom.
The Sabah Agricultural Park and Sabah Agriculture Department have been urged to intensify promotion as many people are still unaware of the park’s existence and attractions. The effort is important so that the facilities and plant collection can benefit younger generations and visitors.
“We can inform our friends in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Brunei that there is a beautiful place rich in knowledge and various native plants found only in Sabah, but which have been collected at this agricultural park,” he said.
He welcomed the participation of 550 students from 12 schools around Tenom who took part in various activities throughout the festival.
