KOTA KINABALU: July 28, 2026 – A total of 2,052 graduates from Polytechnic and Community College (POLYCC) institutions in the Sabah Zone were honoured in the state’s first centralised convocation ceremony, which will run for four days from 21 to 24 September.
The convocation involves 12 institutions across Sabah – three polytechnics and nine community colleges.
Deputy Director General (Governance) of the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (JPPKK), Ts. Abdul Razak Sabtu, said the joint event was aimed at recognising the achievements of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates in the state. Four sessions will be held over the four-day period.
He was speaking after a courtesy call on the Governor at Istana Seri Kinabalu to extend an official invitation to Tun Musa Aman, who is scheduled to officiate the first session on 21 September.
According to Abdul Razak, the zonal organisation represents a new approach by JPPKK to coordinate convocation ceremonies nationwide. Sabah is one of seven zones adopting this method.
Overall, the implementation will involve 36 polytechnics and 106 community colleges, with more than 20,000 graduates taking part across all zones. Currently, total POLYCC student enrolment nationwide exceeds 100,000. The department is expected to produce its millionth graduate since the establishment of the country’s first such institution, Ungku Omar Polytechnic, in 1969.
Efforts to strengthen TVET education in Sabah are continuing with the establishment of Kota Belud Polytechnic and Kinabatangan Community College. Construction approval has been obtained, and land acquisition processes are currently under way before building work begins.
Also present during the courtesy call were Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic director Md Nor Abdul Halim; Tawau Community College director Ts. Md Syadiqin Awg Adi @ Jumaat; Sandakan Polytechnic director Mohd Sahran @ Awang Mohidin; Beaufort Community College director Ts. Julkifli Ag. Besar; and Deputy Director of Academic Support, Ustaz Muhammadin Mohd Jair.
