MATUNGGONG: Nov 2 — Needing assistance should not come at the expense of senior citizens’ dignity and their freedom to voice their views on their own care.
State Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Julita Majungki said elderly folk who require health care support must continue to be given the space to decide on their care according to their own abilities.

“Needing assistance does not mean their right to voice their views on their own care should be set aside,” she said when officiating the Sabah State-level World Senior Citizens Day 2026 celebration at the Matunggong Open Hall, yesterday.
She explained that health care for senior citizens must be tailored to each individual’s level of ability rather than based solely on age.

According to her, many senior citizens remain healthy and are able to live independently, while others need support in managing their daily lives.
“The goal is not merely to meet treatment needs, but also to help senior citizens maintain their ability, freedom and dignity,” she said.
The approach is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Healthy Ageing concept and the Health Ministry’s Action Plan for Senior Citizens’ Health Services 2023-2030.
The plan covers health screening and assessment, medical examinations, treatment, counselling, referrals, home care and rehabilitation.
