PENAMPANG: Oct 1, 2026 — The Clean and Smoke-Free Premises (BeBAs) programme will continue this year to strengthen food safety and create a smoke-free environment across Sabah.

Sabah Women, Health and People’s Well-being Minister Datuk Julita Majungki stressed that maintaining cleanliness and clean air in restaurants should already be a daily practice for the community.

“Cleanliness, food safety and a smoke-free environment must be part of our daily culture, not merely practices during inspections or specific programmes,” she said.

She said this when officiating the launch of the BeBAs Programme Series 3 2026 at Funky Farm Food Court in Kepayan, here today.

According to Julita, the public health programme is carried out continuously with the involvement of the Sabah State Health Department (JKNS), local authorities (PBT), food operators and the community.

The campaign series began as a pilot project in Bandar Kubota, Tawau in 2024, before continuing at Heritage Street, Imago Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu last year.

Through this third series in Penampang district, food handlers are urged to meet the standards for the Clean and Safe (BeSS) recognition, including the mandatory anti-typhoid vaccination.

Julita added that enforcement of the smoking ban under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) is now being strengthened to protect the public from the dangers of cigarette and vape smoke.

The monitoring operation this time recorded 100 per cent compliance among premises operators in displaying no-smoking signs.

Also present at the event were Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr William Gotulis and Penampang Municipal Council president Noemi Dyena John Tren.
