KOTA KINABALU: Measures taken by the Sabah Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Transport to address congestion at Sepanggar Container Port have begun to show results, with waiting times successfully reduced.
Deputy Chief Minister III and Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said 10 measures had been introduced, including a Booking Window system and the establishment of a special task force chaired by himself, involving industry players, port users, shipping agents and transport associations.
“This issue remains a priority and continuous initiatives are being implemented to improve operational efficiency,” he said.
According to him, the port expansion project has now reached 61% completion, compared with 26-27% when he took over, with weekly monitoring to ensure implementation remained on schedule.
The increase in container volume reflected the region’s economic growth, but current capacity remained insufficient.
In light of this, the ministry was examining proposals to relocate Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) operations from Sepanggar to Kota Kinabalu Port to increase container storage space and improve operational efficiency.
Mr Ewon made clear that the ministry remained committed to further increasing port capacity to support the growth of Sabah’s industrial and trade sectors.
