KOTA KINABALU: Sept 25, 2026 — The Sabah government will expand the installation of digital billboards across the state.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk James Ratib said the initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (KSTI) in cooperation with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKTP) and local authorities (PBT).
“The use of a digital system allows billboard content to be changed more easily without the need to print and replace materials repeatedly. We can save costs because we do not need to produce billboards repeatedly,” he said.
He said installation locations would be determined by PBT and KSTI, with strategic areas identified first.
“We want at least for there to be renewal in Sabah, namely digitalisation,” he said.
James said this to reporters after the Smart TV Handover Ceremony and Presentation of the Digital Billboard Initiative Card and Solar System for Sabah Government Buildings last Wednesday.
On the solar system, he said KSTI was ready to help interested ministries and government departments.
“We are ready to install this solar system for any government department that wants to reduce electricity consumption. The installation of this solar system can reduce electricity consumption by about 10 per cent,” he said.
Commenting on the Smart TVs, James said the devices would be handed over to KKTP before being distributed to PBT.
Meanwhile, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the proposal would be fine-tuned with ministry officials.
“This initiative is very good because it can facilitate work, provide good information and make work more effective,” he said.
Also present were KSTI Permanent Secretary Datuk Hassan Mahali; KKTP Permanent Secretary Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani; and Sabah State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh.
