KOTA KINABALU: Aug 17, 2026 — Police have denied viral claims regarding the entry of a group of armed men into Semporna and Lahad Datu.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) Commander Datuk Victor Sanjos said the security situation in the area remains under control and the public need not be alarmed.

ESSCOM continues to carry out monitoring and security control measures, particularly in waters and strategic locations within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESS Zone).

Members of the public are reminded not to believe or spread unverified information.

ESSCOM warned that the dissemination of speculation and unauthenticated information could cause public anxiety and disrupt public order.

Authorities will take firm legal action against individuals found to be spreading fake news.

The public is urged to refer to official sources such as the Royal Malaysia Police, ESSCOM and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for verified information.

The claims had previously gone viral via a Facebook post alleging that a group of armed men had arrived in Semporna and Lahad Datu.
