0.4m tsunami expected to hit Sabah east coast

KOTA KINABALU: June 8, 2026 – A tsunami of up to 0.4 metres is expected to affect coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu following a strong magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck Mindanao, Philippines, this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) said in a statement that the earthquake occurred at 7.37am at a depth of 50 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 5.7° North and longitude 125.1° East.

According to MET Malaysia, tremors were also felt in several areas around Tawau and Semporna.

“Based on MET Malaysia’s analysis, a tsunami of up to 0.4 metres is expected to reach the coastal areas of Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu between 10.30am and 12.00 noon on June 8, 2026,” the statement said.

Members of the public in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and comply with instructions issued by the authorities from time to time.

MET Malaysia said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
