TAWAU: August 2, 2026 – The Malaysian Prevention of Drug Abuse Association (PEMADAM) has stepped up its efforts to combat drug abuse through the FKAT 2026 Fishing Programme held at the Sabindo (Trauslen) waterfront here on Saturday, following the identification of several areas in Tawau as hotspots for syabu (crystal methamphetamine) abuse due to their proximity to international borders.
Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Development Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said drug abuse remains a primary threat to the future of young people, particularly in border areas such as Tawau.
He noted that Tawau’s location near the Philippines and Indonesia makes the district vulnerable to the influx of negative influences, including syabu abuse.
Therefore, the fight against drugs requires the involvement of all parties, as the issue is not solely an enforcement matter but also demands public awareness and collective responsibility.
“PEMADAM was established to raise awareness among all parties about our roles and responsibilities in ensuring that drugs can be combated,” he told the media at the FKAT 2026 Fishing Programme organised by PEMADAM Tawau Municipal Council.
According to Nizam, community-based programmes such as FKAT 2026 help engage the public through leisure activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, while steering young people away from drug abuse.
“It also strengthens the spirit of unity and promotes Tawau as a district rich in cultural diversity and living in harmony,” he added.
