KENINGAU: Sept 15, 2026 – SMS or WhatsApp messages claiming that someone has won a lucrative prize may look convincing, but they can be a trap set by scammers.
The modus operandi begins when a victim receives a message claiming they have won a contest before being instructed to click a link to claim the prize.
The victim is then asked to pay certain fees for processing, insurance or taxes. They are also asked to fill in personal or banking information through the link.
This can give scammers room to take control of the account before money is withdrawn without the victim’s knowledge.
The public is advised to adopt the 3S concept — Soal (Question), Sekat (Block), Sebar (Share).
Question the authenticity of information through a company’s official channels. Block yourself from sharing personal or banking information, and avoid suspicious links.
Share information on scammers’ modus operandi with the authorities or close contacts.
If you become a victim, contact your bank’s hotline, the NSRC at 997, and then lodge a police report.
Remember, genuine prizes do not require any payment.
