KOTA KINABALU: Oct 5, 2026 — The Sabah Creative Associations Coalition (KREATIF SABAH) wants to ensure locally composed songs with potential can become theme songs or soundtracks for local films.

The aspiration was shared by KREATIF SABAH chairman Chester Pang after the semi-finals of the songwriting competition. A total of 24 local composers competed on Oct 4, 2026, at Kompleks Karamunsing.

According to Chester, the move is aimed at bringing songwriters directly together with mainstream directors and producers. The objective is to open up opportunities for collaboration and licensing of works.

“We want to create a space so that the songs produced do not end up merely as competition entries. They have the potential to become theme songs or soundtracks for films and television dramas,” he said.

Chester, who is also president of the Sabah Film and Visual Association (SAFVA), explained that the approach is important for building an Orange Economy ecosystem. This ecosystem can generate long-term income for arts practitioners.

Programme director Guadik Ansiw said the competition, held over four weeks from Sept 1, 2026, received 34 entries from local composers.

Of that number, nine entries did not meet the eligibility requirements. One contestant withdrew after being unable to provide a singer for the semi-final performance.

The preliminary screening received sponsorship funding from SEDCO chairman Datuk Masiung Bana.

Interestingly, this edition allowed composers to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to save on production costs. However, every song must be sung by a human to preserve vocal authenticity.

The 10 best works have now qualified for the finals next December, namely Kinasuaban Awagu, Takkan Pernah Ku Lepaskan, Hentikan Lah, Tenang and Senja di Hujung Waktu.

Also listed are Saat Ku Kembali, Binuluntung Tulan, Setia Menantimu, Anekdot Cinta and Hujung Cintaku.

The grand final will offer cash prizes totalling RM16,000. Several special awards will also be presented, including Best Vocal and Best Music Video.
