KUALA LUMPUR: Oct 28, 2026 — Labuan has received good news. The proposal to raise the duty-free goods value threshold to RM10,000 for visitors to the island will take effect on 1 January 2027.
Sekijang Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the implementation is subject to a minimum stay requirement of 48 hours for visitors.
She said the move is expected to attract tourists, stimulate the economy and generate spillover benefits for local traders.
“The economic spillover is hoped to create more job opportunities and increase the income of local communities,” she said when debating the Supply Bill 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
She, who is also the chairman of the MADANI Government Backbenchers Club (BBC), explained that the matter was among the proposals raised before being clarified by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, through a written reply.
Other key areas of the government’s attention include the SST tax issue involving more than 100 small and medium enterprise (SME) companies.
The government is also reported to have agreed to extend the e-Invoice transition period until 31 December 2027, while providing strategic investment incentives to boost the tuna and fisheries industry.
Concluding her remarks, Dr Zaliha reaffirmed her commitment to Labuan’s development.
“Labuan is always close to my heart. My hope is that every development step taken can restore Labuan’s economic momentum and ensure its people also enjoy the benefits of this progress,” she said.
