Foreign national held with syabu in crime prevention patrol

TAWAU: 16 June, 2026 – A foreign national has been arrested by police on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu, during a crime prevention patrol in Kampung Blok 31, Tawau.

Tawau District Police Chief, ACP Jasmin Hussin, said the 23-year-old suspect was detained following information received from the public regarding suspicious activity in the area.

According to him, the suspect attempted to flee as officers were about to conduct a check, but was eventually apprehended after a brief struggle with police personnel.

“At the time, the suspect was seen throwing an object to the ground. Upon examination, it was found to contain a transparent plastic packet with a crystalline substance believed to be syabu, weighing approximately 0.14 grammes,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

ACP Jasmin added that the suspect, who resides in Kampung Batu 14, Jalan Apas, Tawau, is currently being held to assist with further investigations under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The seized items have been taken to the Tawau police station for further action.

He also reiterated the Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) commitment to stepping up efforts to combat drug abuse through patrols, monitoring and continuous operations in areas identified as high-risk.

Members of the public, he said, are urged to continue channelling information to the police to help curb drug abuse and trafficking activities, in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
