KOTA KINABALU: Sept 17, 2026 — Church leaders and institutions play a major role in building a peaceful, united and harmonious Malaysia.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the contribution of churches in Sabah is not only in the spiritual aspect but also covers education, welfare, youth development, family strengthening and assistance to those in need.
“All these are very meaningful contributions to the development of the Sabah community as a whole,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the Malaysia Day of Prayer (MDOP) 2026 – Ecumenical Prayer Service at All Saints’ Cathedral, yesterday.
He added that the programme on Malaysia Day also reminds the people of the journey of the formation of Malaysia and Sabah’s position in the formation of Malaysia.
He said the diversity of ethnic groups, cultures and religions in Sabah must continue to be preserved through mutual respect and understanding.
“I believe churches in Sabah can continue to be an example of how unity can be translated through good relations and service to the community,” he said.
In this regard, he encouraged churches in Sabah to continue helping those in need, strengthening family institutions and guiding the younger generation.
He also called on churches to build relationships with various parties for the well-being of the people of Sabah.
MDOP 2026 carries the theme “That We May Be One – One in Christ, Proclaiming Hope, Serving Communities” or “Supaya Kita Menjadi Satu – Satu dalam Kristus, Memberitakan Pengharapan, Melayani Masyarakat”.
The ceremony, jointly organised by the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) and Sabah Council of Churches (SCC), was also attended by the Christian community from all over Malaysia via online broadcast.
