86 reports received, PDRM probes speech touching on religious sensitivities

KUALA LUMPUR: Sept 18, 2026 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has received 86 reports over a speech by Selangor Umno representative Datuk Noorazli Said that touched on religious sensitivities at the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre (WTC), Kuala Lumpur.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director CP Datuk M. Kumar said the case was being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“A total of 93 witnesses have had their statements recorded to assist investigations, comprising members of the public, the organisers and Umno representatives, including the suspect,” he said.

Section 298 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to one year or a fine or both for offences related to religious sensitivities.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 provides for a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both for offences related to the improper use of network facilities or services.

The investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers today for further instructions and advice.

PDRM advises the public not to speculate in a way that could disrupt the investigation process or spread unverified information.
