KOTA KINABALU: Aug 17, 2026 — The Borneo Inclusive Ensemble from SK Pendidikan Khas Kota Kinabalu has proven that deaf students are capable of playing music, performing using angklung and toggungak (bamboo gongs) at the 14th MSS Sabah Special Education Athletics Championship.

The performance took place on Aug 13 at the Likas Sports Complex, Kota Kinabalu, which hosted the championship from Aug 10 to 14, 2026.

Students in the group learn to play music using methods tailored to their needs. They utilise vibrations, visuals, movement and cues to follow rhythm and play together.

This approach enables deaf students to showcase their musical talents and gain performance experience before the special education community, including participants from across Sabah.

Their involvement does not stop at the championship, as they are set to continue performing at the North Borneo Rainforest Festival 2026, presenting a mini performance featuring several traditional musical instruments.

The opportunity, extended through an invitation from organising committee member Hairiah Daud, provides deaf students with space to develop their talents, boost self-confidence, and introduce traditional music to the community.

The students’ participation also received support from SK Pendidikan Khas Kota Kinabalu Headmaster Hamka Eallie.

The Borneo Inclusive Ensemble is guided by Stefanus Lucas, with assistance from Jaimin Juani @ Azizul Abdullah and Syed Mohd Farhan Syed Rosli.
