KOTA KINABALU: July 12, 2026 – A total of 242 athletes from 22 affiliate members of the Sabah Sepak Takraw Association (ASTAKA) are expected to compete in the 42nd President’s Cup Sepak Takraw Championship, which will be held in Tawau from 25 to 27 September.
ASTAKA Honorary Secretary Suhaimi Abdullah said the tournament would feature four categories – Men’s Regu, Women’s Regu, Men’s Quadrant and Women’s Quadrant – and would serve as a crucial platform for unearthing new talent across Sabah.
He noted that the annual event was not only a competitive arena but also played a key role in strengthening fraternal ties and fostering the spirit of sportsmanship within the state’s sepak takraw community.
Meanwhile, ASTAKA President and Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) Vice-President, Datuk Hj. Roslie Hj. Ibrahim, expressed hope that all affiliates, organising committees, government agencies and strategic partners would extend their full cooperation to ensure the championship ran smoothly.

“This championship serves as the ideal stage to identify potential players who can become successors for the Sabah team, while also strengthening unity and the spirit of family among the sepak takraw fraternity,” he said.
In a separate development, ASTAKA confirmed that it had received approval for the construction of the ASTAKA Sabah Sepak Takraw Academy Hall, which is expected to act as a catalyst for the sport’s development.
Roslie explained that the construction of the academy hall would reinforce efforts to nurture more competitive athletes, coaches and technical officials. This, he said, would ensure the continued success of the Sabah team, which has been one of the main gold-medal contributors for the Sabah contingent at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) for over a decade.
