KOTA KINABALU: Sept 15, 2026 — The Sabah government is studying two proposed locations to move the Kota Kinabalu Central Market out of the city centre.
Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said the two locations are a 40-acre site along Jalan UMS in Alam Mesra, and another near Kampung Likas along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens.
“The relocation of the Kota Kinabalu Central Market out of the city centre is among the efforts we are studying to provide larger, more organised and comfortable market facilities for the people and traders,” he said after inspecting both locations yesterday.
The Alam Mesra site is proposed as the Kota Kinabalu North Integrated Market Hub, comprising wet and dry markets, a centre for cultural, local and tourism products, a hawker centre and a fish jetty.
He added that the proposal is still at an early stage, while Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) will prepare a working paper for the state government’s consideration.
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman; Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Sabin Samitah; and Assistant Ministers to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun.
