RANAU: July 19, 2026 – The Pitas athletics contingent have set themselves a target of at least one gold medal and qualification for the finals in every event at the 2026 MSS Sabah Championships, currently under way in Ranau.
Team coach George said the target was realistic given that competition at this year’s edition is expected to be fiercer than ever.
“We are aiming for at least one gold medal, and our athletes need to reach the finals in their respective events,” he told TV Sabah reporters today.
He said preparations had been carried out well in advance, with consistent training sessions every Monday to Friday, in addition to participating in open championships across Sabah to boost performance and competitive experience.
However, George acknowledged that the biggest challenge for the Pitas contingent is coordinating training schedules between primary and secondary school athletes, who have different coaches, as well as the logistical issue of travelling to Ranau using teachers’ vehicles.
The difference in climate has also been a key consideration. “In Pitas, you start sweating within minutes of warming up, but in Ranau it is different. Athletes need to take longer to ensure their bodies are properly ready,” George explained.
Another coach emphasised the importance of consistent performance and mental resilience throughout the competition, with coach support and team spirit serving as key elements.
After the championships, athlete development programmes will continue through open tournaments and ongoing training to ensure young talents are continuously honed.
Pitas have also identified several athletes with potential, including the Under-15 girls’ shot putter, the 800-metre runner, and the 2,000-metre steeplechase runner.
The team also plans to identify talent at an earlier stage to be absorbed into the district’s elite athlete programme, so they can receive more systematic training and competition exposure from a young age.
