KUALA LUMPUR: September 22, 2026 – The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has stressed that it was not notified of the adjustment to the Bumiputera equity ownership requirement for private education institutions (IPS) under the Education Ministry (MOE).
The clarification follows MOE’s media statement on Sept 21 announcing that the minimum 30 per cent Bumiputera equity ownership requirement is no longer imposed on private limited companies operating IPS under MOE.
MOE said the decision was made after discussions with MITI. According to MOE, the adjustment aligns with the current needs of the education sector and ensures that participation remains open.
In a September 21 statement, MITI said it had referred to MOE’s statement, but the matter had not been communicated to it.
“Matters related to the Bumiputera equity ownership policy fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Economy through the Economic Planning Unit (EPU),” MITI said.
MITI hopes the clarification corrects understanding of its role so that information conveyed to the public is accurate and clear.
