KOTA KINABALU: Oct 10, 2026 – Sabahans and Sarawakians have been urged not to be influenced by entities claiming to be a government and attempting to register North Borneo Sabah abroad.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud stressed that bypassing official legal channels was irresponsible and could undermine the nation’s sovereignty.
He said this following an invitation on Facebook calling on the public to gather in front of the Parliament of Victoria, Australia, to establish the movement.
“The majority of Sabahans and Sarawakians want to follow official channels. This is why we are running the Aku Kasih Malaysia programme, so that we can raise this civic awareness,” he told reporters at the ADTEC Kota Kinabalu hall today.
Mustapha believes the majority of Sabah society is rational because the foundations of nation-building were well passed down by previous leaders, including the late Tun Mustapha and the late Tun Fuad.
He therefore hopes young Sabahans currently overseas will always respect official channels when voicing opinions to ensure Malaysia endures forever.
He said the conditions for rights claims under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) have been set, and most matters have been successfully fulfilled under the Madani government.
He also drew attention to regional security issues following reports of military operations and the construction of a foreign airstrip at the tip of Pulau Bangga and Pulau Balabang in the Philippines.
The geopolitical situation demands strengthening the nation’s sovereignty bulwark, he said, because any internal division would only give international parties an easy opening to take advantage.
However, Mustapha said the government is ready to open mature negotiations and hold engagement sessions with the overseas group to correct any misunderstanding of information.
