BEAUFORT: August 10, 2026 – The Jalur Gemilang Independence Convoy (KMJG) has changed its approach this year by going on foot through the Langkah Jiwa Merdeka (Step of the Independent Soul) programme at the Bagandang Square weekly tamu (open-air market). The move aims to reach out to the community and ignite the spirit of patriotism.

Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih @ Liasnih, said the experience was different from previous vehicle convoys.

“Programmes like this are carried out in a simple manner, but their impact on the people is profound. We are able to meet and interact more closely with them,” he said.

Participants distributed the Jalur Gemilang (national flags) and chatted with the community along the way. Observations found that many young traders earned between RM150 and RM500 per day. This shows that economic opportunities are always open for the youth.

Isnin stressed that flying the Jalur Gemilang is not wasteful, but rather important for raising awareness of love for the country.

“Previously we used vehicle convoys; now we walk. The concept is the same, only the method is different. What matters is that we go down to the people together,” he said.

The programme also served to remind the community about the history of independence and the importance of appreciating the celebrations of National Day and Sabah Day.

Also present were Sabah Information Director, Jainisah Mohd Noor, and Beaufort District Office Assistant Administrative Officer, Azlan Rizwan Zaman.
