TAMPARULI: June 23, 2026 – More than 40 residents of Kampung Molisau in Tenghilan are making the most of their free time by participating in the English For Employability programme, held at the Kampung Molisau hall since last week. The initiative aims to improve English proficiency and open up greater opportunities in education, employment, business and international communication.

The five-week programme not only gives participants the chance to learn the basics of English but also demonstrates that free time can be filled with activities capable of bringing positive change to one’s life amid today’s era of globalisation and technological advancement.

CAROLINE (standing), who is also an English teacher, is teaching participants who are from the Molisau village community.

Programme instructor Puan Caroline Duliat, a native of Kampung Molisau, expressed pride in the commitment shown by participants who have attended the classes consistently.

She said the response received shows that the community is increasingly aware of the importance of English in daily life and the working world.

“English not only helps a person secure better employment but also boosts self-confidence to communicate and interact with the wider community,” she said.

Her dedication in travelling from Kota Belud to conduct the classes has also earned appreciation from the villagers.

“Thank you to the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), the Sabah Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (KPSTI) and AMC University College for this noble effort,” she said.

Elexter Duari, Chairman of the Kampung Molisau Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), said programmes like this should continue as they bring significant benefits to the local community, particularly the younger generation.

He said filling free time with learning activities can help shape a generation that is more knowledgeable, disciplined and confident.

“Rather than our children spending too much time playing on their phones or video games, it is better for them to join programmes like this which can enhance their knowledge and skills,” he said.

For one participant, Nancy Julian, 53, the classes have helped her overcome the fear of speaking in English.

“Before this, I was afraid to speak in English because I worried about making mistakes in pronunciation. But after joining these classes, I feel more confident to try and communicate,” she said.

Sadiona Rudy, 15, said she took the opportunity even though she has not yet reached the age of 18 because she has a strong interest in the English subject.

The programme is not only attended by adults and youths but has also attracted primary and secondary school students willing to spend their evenings learning – proving that learning knows no age limit.

Programmes like English For Employability prove that when communities are given the opportunity and space to learn, they are willing to put in the effort to improve their standard of living and open up more opportunities for the future.

Indeed, filling free time with beneficial activities like learning English not only improves individual skills but also helps create a more competitive, knowledgeable society ready to face the challenges of the modern world.

The success of the programme in Kampung Molisau is hoped to serve as an example for other communities to likewise promote a culture of lifelong learning in order to nurture a progressive and sustainable society.
