KOTA KINABALU: 11 June 2026 – A total of 94% of 33 premises inspected across Sabah during Ops Pamer 2026 complied with the requirement to display their Fire Certificate, while two premises (6%) were found to have failed to do so.

The operation, conducted simultaneously on 10 June, focused on supermarkets and shopping malls to ensure that Fire Certificates were displayed in locations easily visible to the public, as required under Regulation 6(2) of the Fire Services (Fire Certificate) Regulations 2001.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Pisar Aziz said the two non-compliant premises had been issued compounds.

Fire safety information sessions and advisory services provided to premises representatives to increase awareness and compliance with legal requirements.

He explained that Ops Pamer was not merely an enforcement exercise, but aimed to raise awareness and strengthen a culture of compliance with fire safety regulations among premises owners and management.

“The Fire Certificate serves as proof that a designated premises has met the fire safety requirements set by the department. Therefore, the certificate must be displayed at all times in a location easily seen by visitors and the public,” he said.

Among the violations identified during the operation were failure to display the Fire Certificate, displaying it in a non-strategic location, and keeping the certificate in the management office without public display.

Although the recorded compliance rate is encouraging, JBPM Sabah believes there is still room for improvement, particularly in enhancing premises owners’ understanding of their legal responsibilities regarding fire safety.

The department will continue to conduct periodic inspections, enforcement operations and advocacy programmes to ensure compliance levels continue to improve across the state. Premises that fail to comply with the relevant provisions may face stricter enforcement action under the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341).

The success of Ops Pamer 2026 reflects the growing awareness among premises operators of the importance of fire safety compliance, thereby contributing to efforts to create a safer environment for the public.
