PUTRAJAYA: Oct 22, 2026 — Local navigation app TuJu recorded over 700,000 downloads within a day after the National Security Council (NSC) banned Waze over legal jurisdiction issues linked to Israel.
National Security Director-General Raja Dato’ Nushirwan Zainal Abidin said the restriction on Waze was imposed after its user terms were updated to fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of courts in Tel Aviv, Israel.
“Data is a strategic national asset. The government will not compromise when the movement, location and device data of the people is placed under foreign jurisdiction at risk of being misused by malicious parties,” he said at a media conference today.
He explained that the ban does not involve Google Maps as the app is based in the United States. Civil servants and the public have been urged to immediately uninstall Waze to stop passive data collection.
To accommodate user needs, TuJu version 2.0 is now available for download on Android devices, while the iOS version will be launched at the end of this month.
The government has given assurances of cybersecurity, with all user data stored entirely on servers owned by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM). The data complies with the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Act 854).
