STAR election machinery, grassroots ready for battle in Kiulu

TUARAN: As Sabah gears up for the upcoming state election, Parti Solidariti Tanahairku (STAR) is positioning itself as a formidable contender to capture the Kiulu state assembly seat, banking on experience and proven leadership to secure voter confidence.

STAR Kiulu deputy division chief, Jackson Seminggau, emphasized that the party’s decision to contest solo in the state election has energized its campaign in Kiulu, traditionally a competitive battleground.

“Experience and track record are key factors for the party to win this seat,” Jackson said, underscoring the importance of selecting a candidate who embodies both qualities to lead the charge.

At the forefront of STAR’s campaign is Terence Sinti, the party’s Kiulu division chief and a senior party leader who has been closely aligned with STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan since the party’s early days.

A former banker turned politician, Terence brings a blend of professional expertise, long-standing loyalty, and grassroots engagement that the party believes resonates strongly with local voters.

“To STAR grassroots in Kiulu, he is a winnable candidate,” Jackson noted.

Terence’s political journey has been marked by steady progress. In the 13th General Election, he garnered 1,025 votes for STAR, and in the 14th General Election (2018), he contested again the Kiulu seat, securing 2,457 votes—approximately 19% of the total cast. While finishing third in a four-way race, his performance demonstrated growing support and established him as a key player in Sabah’s political landscape.

Beyond election day, Terence has remained deeply engaged with the community. In February 2025, he spearheaded a significant membership drive for STAR Kiulu, adding over 520 new members and creating 16 new branch committees. This grassroots expansion highlights his commitment to strengthening STAR’s presence and influence in the region.

The upcoming election is seen by many as a defining moment for Sabah, a state with a long history of striving for greater political autonomy within Malaysia. STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has consistently championed the cause of self-determination, advocating for governance by “true sons and daughters of the soil” — Sabahans who prioritize the state’s dignity and autonomy.

For decades, Sabahans have been promised increased autonomy, development, and restoration of rights, yet many feel these promises remain unfulfilled.

“Sabahans, especially the people of Kiulu, feel that we are close to achieving this,” Jackson said.

“But it’s crucial that the right grassroots leaders are chosen—leaders who can deliver results.”

“As Sabah moves towards a pivotal election, STAR Kiulu is banking on Terence’s blend of experience, loyalty, community roots, and commitment to Sabah’s cause to capture the seat and help steer the state toward a future marked by greater self-determination and pride,” he added.
