KUALA LUMPUR: Oct 10, 2026 – The government has agreed to defer loan repayments to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) for borrowers earning below RM2,500 a month from 2027, benefiting about 400,000 people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the deferment aims to ease the financial burden of graduates who are not yet able to repay their education loans.

“This means if a person’s income has not reached RM2,500 a month, they are not required to pay anything to PTPTN,” he said when tabling the Fifth MADANI Budget, themed “Menggapai di Langit, Mengakar di Bumi”, in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

He said higher-income borrowers only need to pay RM50 a month, in line with the government’s provisions.

“I believe it will not be an issue because if they cannot afford it, they do not need to pay. If they can afford it, they pay only RM50 a month,” he said.

The government also agreed to give a 10 per cent discount to borrowers with no arrears who repay regularly.

He said the government also agreed to provide tax relief to employers who repay their employees’ PTPTN loans.

The incentive covers repayments made from Jan 1, 2027 to Dec 31, 2028.
