RANAU: July 22, 2026 – The Kota Kinabalu contingent has set a target of 16 medals at the 2026 Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSS Sabah) championships and is also aiming for the overall title.
Julenus, the contingent’s head coach, said preparations had been intensively under way since last year, and that the athletes were now in peak condition ahead of the competition.
“Our athletes are 100 percent ready, both mentally and emotionally,” he told reporters at the Ranau Sports Complex.
Each athlete has been training under their respective coaches, with schools and the Kota Kinabalu District Education Office providing support and monitoring throughout the preparation process.
The team’s strength lies in the experience of its existing athletes, most of whom have competed in previous editions. Rising young talents have also bolstered the squad’s composition.
Julenus acknowledged that a key challenge was the athletes’ involvement in various other sporting events. However, coordination with the education office had ensured they were now focusing solely on athletics.
The Kota Kinabalu District Education Office will continue to monitor promising athletes through data collection, while collaboration with schools, teachers and clubs is being pursued to support long-term performance development.
Julenus expressed hope that the competing athletes would deliver their best performances. Securing spots for the 2026 Malaysia Schools Sports Council (MSSM) championships was also a priority for the squad.
