KOTA KINABALU: 23 July 2026 – The state government is implementing four road projects as short-term and long-term measures to address traffic congestion in the towns of Ranau and Kundasang, particularly during weekends, school holidays and festive seasons.
Deputy Chief Minister I, who is also the Minister of Works and Utilities, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said two projects currently underway are the upgrade of Jalan Kampung Mohimboyon–Lipantai–Pahu and Jalan Tambiau–Sarapong, while two further projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-13) are the construction of the Ranau Bypass from Bundu Tuhan to Kilimu and the upgrade of Jalan Kampung Mesilau–Kampung Lipasu.
He was speaking in response to a question from Datuk Haji Rusdin @ Musidi Riman (Paginatan) during the Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
According to him, the upgrade project for Jalan Kampung Mohimboyon–Lipantai–Pahu, spanning six kilometres, has now achieved 69.69% physical progress and is expected to be completed in 2027, while the Jalan Tambiau–Sarapong project, measuring 4.05 km, has reached 5.42% physical progress and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
The government also plans to construct overtaking lanes and climbing lanes at several strategic locations under the Sabah Public Works Department (JKR) Traffic Management Programme to smoothen traffic flow and improve road user safety.
For the long-term measures, the 30 km Ranau Bypass is currently at the study and detailed design preparation stage, while the upgrade project for Jalan Kampung Mesilau–Kampung Lipasu, spanning eight kilometres, has been approved under RMKe-13 with a project cost of RM138.661 million and an allocation ceiling of RM40 million.
He said the implementation of these projects is expected to provide more alternative routes, increase road capacity, reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times and improve safety and comfort for road users.
