PUTRAJAYA: November 6, 2026 – WhatsApp and Telegram users are urged to be more vigilant against suspicious file deliveries that could potentially serve as a channel for cyber attacks, including the spread of malware.
The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), in a statement, warned that cybercriminals are now posing as senders of financial or legal documents to trick victims into downloading and opening malicious files.
According to NACSA, formats such as .vbs, .apk, .zip, .iso and .xlsx could potentially be exploited to execute malicious code, steal personal information and enable unauthorised access to victims’ devices.
Users are advised to disable the automatic download function on WhatsApp and Telegram, refrain from opening attachments from unknown sources and verify the sender’s identity before accessing any unexpected files, the agency said.
Applications and operating systems should also be kept constantly updated to reduce security risks.
NACSA stressed that cyber security requires the attention of all parties, including individual users who need to be more meticulous when receiving and opening any digital content.
