KOTA KINABALU: Oct 27, 2026 – Sabah Electricity has launched an Electric Motorcycle (EV Bike) Pilot Project to explore the use of electric vehicles in a bid to improve field operational efficiency, optimise expenditure and support environmental sustainability.
A total of five electric motorcycles were handed over for use by meter reading staff in the Retail Division. The key handover ceremony was officiated by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob Hj. Jaafar.
The group was selected as pioneers because their daily tasks involve frequent travel to various customer locations. This allows the suitability of electric motorcycles to be assessed in real operations.
“The use of electric motorcycles has the potential to reduce petrol consumption for operational travel, while opening up room for savings on fuel and maintenance costs,” he said.
Over the six- to 12-month trial period, Sabah Electricity will assess the performance of the motorcycles in terms of energy efficiency, travel distance, battery durability, maintenance costs, safety and their suitability to Sabah’s geographical conditions.
He stressed that the experience of the staff involved is crucial in determining the success of the project. Usage records, costs, performance and meter readers’ feedback will be collected systematically so that decisions are made based on data and actual operational needs.
If the evaluation results show that electric motorcycles are practical, cost-effective and suitable, Sabah Electricity will consider further purchases and a phased expansion of their use across Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
The initiative supports the company’s commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles through the exploration of green technology and efficient energy use.
Sabah Electricity hopes this pilot project will serve as a foundation for continuous improvement in the company’s operations, in line with efforts to provide efficient services to customers while exploring sustainable mobility solutions.
