The victim, Togoi Tawan, 70, was found washed up on the banks of Sungai Kadamaian in Kampung Bokilong at 6.39am, about 1.5 kilometres from his home.

Kota Belud district police chief Superintendent Khairul Shah Peri said the victim left his home at about 4.40pm heading to the river, which is only 200 metres from his residence.
“Family members began to worry after the victim did not return until 9pm before lodging a report with the police,” he said.
“At the time of the incident, the weather was reported to be raining, causing the river water level to rise and the current to become strong. A search operation was carried out together with the Fire and Rescue Department, but it was postponed at night due to dark conditions.”

According to Khairul Shah, the victim’s body was sent to Kota Belud Hospital and a post-mortem will be conducted at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, to determine the actual cause of death.
The case is for now classified as a Sudden Death Report (SDR).
Following the incident, the Kota Belud district police headquarters advised the public to always be careful and to avoid any activities in river areas, especially when the weather is unpredictable and water levels are rising.
