TAWAU: Oct 13, 2026 – All schools in the Tawau district will be closed from Oct 14 after the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading exceeded 150, which is an unhealthy level.
The Sabah State Education Department (JPN Sabah) said in a statement today that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid the risk of air pollution affecting the health and safety of students, teachers and the school community.
All school administrators in the district have been told to comply with the closure directive.
Parents and guardians are advised to ensure their children are in safe places and to reduce outdoor activities.
Parents are also asked to keep abreast of current air quality developments through official channels.
According to the statement, the reopening of schools will depend on current air quality conditions and further official instructions from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and Sabah JPN.
