HOUSTON: June 30, 2026 – Asia’s hopes of progressing further in the 2026 World Cup came to an end as Japan fell 2-1 to Brazil in the round of 32 in Houston, eliminating the continent’s last remaining representative from the tournament.
Japan, who produced a disciplined performance, stunned Brazil by taking the lead in the first half through Kaishu Sano. However, Brazil fought back after the break as Casemiro equalised before Gabriel Martinelli emerged as the hero with a stoppage-time winner.
Despite failing to advance, Japan left a positive impression by displaying competitive performances throughout the tournament and came close to pulling off a major upset against the five-time world champions.
Brazil now progress to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the tie between Ivory Coast and Norway as they continue their quest for a sixth world title.
