KOTA KINABALU: 27 March 2026 – A historic moment was etched into ASSEAN’s history as the organization witnessed the installation of its first woman President, Senator JCI Patricia Poh, a proud daughter of Sabah, at the ASSEAN 1st Board of Directors Meeting & Installation 2026 held at the Sheraton Hotel Kota Kinabalu on Friday night.

The Deputy Chief Minister III of Sabah, who is also the State Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship, and Transport (MINDET), Datuk Ewon Benedict, in his speech, welcomed the delegates and expressed pride in the appointment of the first woman leader from the Land Below the Wind.

“It is indeed a great honour for me to welcome the esteemed delegates to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, in conjunction with the Installation Ceremony of your first woman President—a proud daughter of Sabah and a woman of authority,” he said, while also commending the extraordinary commitment of ASSEAN members.

A total of 10 former Presidents were present that evening to witness this historic moment, demonstrating their strong support and commitment to the association’s new leadership.
Furthermore, Ewon expressed his appreciation for the invitation extended to him and congratulated the new President, Senator JCI Patricia Poh, while wishing her and her Board of Directors a successful term of service.

He also praised the outgoing President, Senator JCI Theodore Garcia, for his dedicated leadership and successful year of service.
In line with the role of his ministry, Ewon stated that the state government’s commitment through MINDET would continue to support the development of young entrepreneurs and leaders, including JCI members. Various initiatives have been provided by the ministry, such as access to financing, entrepreneurial training, capacity development programmes, and strategic networking platforms with industry players and investors.
“We also continue to enhance market access, including supporting local entrepreneurs to expand into international markets, while strengthening the logistics system and supply chain to facilitate business growth in Sabah,” he said.
He expressed confidence that strong collaboration between the government and organisations like ASSEAN would continue to nurture capable leaders and competitive entrepreneurs who can contribute positively to society and the economy.

Ewon expressed his hope that the gathering would strengthen bonds, revive friendships, and further enrich the strong camaraderie that defines ASSEAN. Additionally, he encouraged all members to continue working together in unity to advance the organisation and enhance its positive impact on the wider global community.
