SEMPORNA: Oct 5, 2026 — A 66-year-old Chinese woman tourist died after suffering a health issue while snorkelling in the waters off Pom Pom Island here yesterday.
The incident occurred at about 12.30 pm when the victim, from Yunnan, China, was snorkelling with her family members.
According to the Semporna district police chief, preliminary investigations found that the victim complained of feeling unwell before asking to be brought back up onto the boat.
The victim was later found unconscious on the boat and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but showed no response.
She was then taken to Semporna Hospital for further treatment.
However, a doctor’s examination at the hospital’s Emergency Ward confirmed that she had died.
The victim was reported to have had a history of asthma for about 10 years.
Police are currently investigating the incident.
As such, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) advised tourism operators to always prioritise tourist safety when conducting any activities.
Members of the public with information on the incident are urged to come forward to the nearest police station or contact the investigating officer, ASP Mohammad Ali Amat, at 013-2120852 to assist investigations.
